Jeff Scott – Scott Team Realty – Why People Chose the Outer Banks
If you have the choice to move just about anywhere in the world, then it makes sense to move somewhere where you can enjoy learning about local history. Of course, compared to many places in the world, the Outer Banks recorded history is younger than other places. On the other hand, there have been a few monumental events here that shape our nation and the world. Having this history nearby is comforting. Here are a few Outer Banks historical events that impact our world today.
Wright Brother’s Flight: There are not many inventions that have impacted the world as much as the airplane. At this national park you can walk where man had his first heavier than air powered flight and learn more about how the Wright brothers did it. Locals also often use this park as a place to exercise. You’ll see lots of walkers when you visit.
Lost Colony: The north end of Roanoke Island is where historians believe the first English settlement in North America occurred. There is another national park located on-site and a museum to show what life must have been like there. This colony was unsuccessful. All the colonists disappeared. There are numerous theories about where they went.
Graveyard of the Atlantic: This barrier island has very few safe harbors and a few treacherous inlets. It’s interesting to learn about all the shipwrecks along this coast. Some are accessible from the beach. Visiting the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras can give you a whole new insight into Outer Banks maritime history.
Having this interesting history nearby and learning about it encourages your connection within the community. This great history is another reason why people choose the Outer Banks to be their home.
