Remembering PD Gravett
In remembrance of PD Gravett, by Sandy Martin.
On Tuesday, March 12th, I received a call from my daughter Amanda, her husband Rocky and my mother sharing the news my father had passed away. This has been the hardest couple of weeks of my life. I still can’t believe this happened so fast.
My dad was diagnosed with cancer right before Christmas, and in early January we found out it was Stage 4 Kidney Cancer that had spread to the bones and spine. We were told he had anywhere from 6 months to 2 years to live, he passed within three months. After being diagnosed Dad struggled with tremendous pain, the doctors were finally able to help control with a lot of medication. He completed 10 days of radiation, he was receiving immunotherapy treatments in Charleston, South Carolina.
My mother was taking care of him and the rest of the family was too. We took turns going down to spend time with him. Mark and I made five trips to Charleston since he was diagnosed. Sam was able to spend a few days with him. Amanda and Rocky were down for a little while and were there with grandpa when he passed away.
My dad graduated from VPI, which is now Virginia Tech. His degree was in Architecture, and he was an incredible architect and builder. He was a fantastic golfer and loved watching college basketball; especially Duke. He was a brother, husband, dad, and grandpa. He is missed by all.
A celebration of life is planned for later this spring or summer in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
